Molly Hadfield Social Justice Oration 2018
Thursday, 8 March 2018
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Event image
The Molly Hadfield Social Justice Oration is a community event held annually by the Darebin City Council in celebration of International Women's Day. The event is a tribute to respected Darebin resident Molly Hadfield OAM, who worked tirelessly to advance the rights of women and seniors.

The 2018 oration will feature Keynote Speaker: Mama Alto.
Mama Alto is a gender transcendent diva, cabaret artiste, jazz singer and community activist. She is a non-binary trans femme person of colour who combines storytelling with singing and performance. Mama Alto believes in the potential of storytelling to touch others, through affirming or empowering them, or by challenging or confronting their views and ideas.

This year’s oration will explore gender, specifically the gender binary, its construction, and the ways in which that construction negatively impacts women, within the "Press for Progress" (IWD theme for 2018) of recognition of trans women as real women.

The evening will also feature MC Sherry-Rose Bih Watts and local performing artist Violet Tolhurst.

The event will include light refreshments.

If you have any accessibility requirements, please email Community.Wellbeing@darebin.vic.gov.au or call 8470 8522.

Northcote Town Hall is an accessible venue.

STRATEGY
Written by Judy Doubas
Directed by Lisa Inman
Performed by Sarah Crock, Rowan Francis and Jeremy Skuse

Strategy examines the premise of the provocation defence when a woman’s decision to leave a man is painted as a betrayal and her murder becomes the understandable action of an abandoned man.

A conflicting version of events is elucidated and a woman who has been silenced by her husband, is given the voice she was denied in court.

But the question remains: What constitutes provocation and is it ever a defence to murder?

Ticket includes Q&A after each performance with panel guests including Jane Ashton, Phil Cleary and Annette Gillespie.

All profits from this production will be donated to safe steps

 Love is Love
Saturday, 17 March 2018
to Sunday, 18 March 2018

Event image
Presented by Melbourne Playback Theatre

Saturday and Sunday, 17-18 March, 7:30pm

Love is joyous, love is painful, love is union, commitment, marriage, love is…love. Melbourne Playback Theatre Company invites you to join us at a special event to celebrate, investigate and reflect on what love means to you. The recent postal survey regarding same sex marriage, where the legal rights of private relationships became the subject of public debate, was a difficult and confronting process for many in the LGBTQI+ and wider community. As Australia voted YES, let’s celebrate the outcome together and take some time to share stories of what love means to us. All are welcome.

The core of this event is made up of your stories. Stories and experiences from the audience, inspired by the theme, are invited to be shared. These stories will then be turned into theatre by a team of highly skilled actors and musicians. You can sit back, watch and enjoy, or, if you want to, you are invited to share a story of your own.

Melbourne Playback Theatre’s ensemble of professional actors, musicians and MCs have been delighting audiences for over 35 years with their unique form of improvised theatre that transforms real-life stories into theatre.

“Melbourne Playback harnesses some strange magic to make the everyday so funny and touching. It's truly something to behold” – Rebecca Harkins-Cross, Sydney Morning Herald

“..the ensemble operates like a well-oiled machine…the improvisation is terrifically skilled” - Cameron Woodhead, The Age
