31/10/2018 - 4/11/2018 8:00 PM - 4:30 PM | BK Opera presents Orphée et Euridice / Iphigénie en Tauride Wednesday, 31 October 8pm Friday, 2 November 8pm Sunday, 4 November 2pm
Coming off the success of their critically acclaimed Abduction, BK Opera brings their 2018 to a thought provoking end with a unique double bill of Gluck operas - Orphée et Euridice and Iphigénie en Tauride – from 31 October to 4 November, at Studio 1, Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre.
Both operas, drawn from Ancient Greek legends, centre on loss and trauma: loss of loved ones, loss of homeland and identity. Orphée must brave the furies to save her wife, Euridice. Iphigenie must face the aftermath of her family’s troubled and violent history.
Through these two operas, Director, Kate Millett, delves into the different effects trauma can have on the human psyche.
For Orphee et Euridice, Alison Lemoh returns to BK Opera as Orphée, alongside returning soprano, Rada Tochalna as Amour and, Louise Keast - Soprano in her BK Opera debut, as Euridice.
For Iphigénie en Tauride, Iphigénie will be sung by Erin Towns, with Orestes and Pylades being played by Finn Gilheany and Jonathan Rumsam, in his operatic debut.
Traditionally, Orphée is played by a woman in a pants role, however BK Opera has chosen to simplify this role, and portray a same sex relationship between Orphee and Eurydice. They have done the same with Iphigenie, highlighting the relationship of Oreste and Pylade. These love stories offer representation for those who don’t often see themselves reflected in opera.
